so most of you guys saw that i could not get my jeep into 4low and i still can't i'm not sure what the problem is, there appears to be nothing blocking the linkage and i can get into 2wd and 4high but it refuses to move past neutral. any thoughts no matter how far-off they may seem would be appreciated. oh the t-case is a np 231 amc from an 1988 wrangler for those who didn't see

I wonder if the shift fork inside the transfer case is bent?

I am thinking somthing alone those lines also. It couls also be somthing out of place that it blocking the fork. If you are positive that there is nothing external stopping it from going into low, then your only real options are to pull out the t-case and go through it, or replace it.

I read that body lifts screw up the linkage allignment. You didn't have a bodylift did you?

I would consider trying to shift the linkage right at the t-case (without using the shifter)... maybe the shifter just isn't getting the correct force / angle that it needs to. You will defintely need to find a way to keep the tranny and t-case shifters from coming out of their sockets / shift sheets. This could be very bad if you were in a precarious position!

Maybe jack all 4 corners off the ground and try it that way ( this would reduce the binding forces and keep you from having to drive all over the place trying to figure it out.

Are ALL NP231's the same exact shift pattern?

I also agree about the possiblilty of a bent shift fork.

Keep googling and researching it and I bet you find the answer. Maybe its not all that uncommon?

looking through the way that the shifter and linkage move and after some playing with the assembley i figured out that when i swapped transmissions, the length between the shift-stick lever and the transfer case became shorter, too short for the linkage. i am finishing up the fix thanks for your advice guys.
