Expert Posts: 3199 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Mid-Willamette Valley | That'd be awesome if a small group could go check it out and report back at the meeting... Used to be some really nice scenic trails up there. Last time I was there (maybe 8 years ago?), we went a little rogue and had a blast winching through a trail all night long. Just 3 of us in the sami. I had just rebuilt & installed the 8274 and we used it to winch countless trees outta the trail and it saved our butts. After exiting the area on the north end, we were pulled over. The sami was absolutely COVERED in mud. Knowing that we had been in an area we weren't supposed to be, we quickly devised a plan to explain we were lost and had been trying to get home for hours. Long story short, it worked. I still count my blessings for that one!

Possible reasons for overheating: Low coolant level, plugged radiator, thermostat stuck closed, clutch fan malfuntioning, Low oil level, Engine running too lean, etc.

Expert Posts: 2639 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Outer Mongolia | Also a bad waterpump can cause overheating. I fought overheating on my Toyota, ended up buying a brand new radiator a few years ago and it runs nice and cool even on 100+ degree days. If you need a hand we can help you out.

Member Posts: 13 Location: right here | nothing broke because i have fought with over heating before and was watching the temp. like a hawk. one of my electric fans quit on me and i am trying to figure out why. it is not the switch (this one i ran through a toggle switch, but the main big fan still runs on the thermostat) or fuse, i tried to bypass all that and go strait to the battery, but that did not work. drew thinks (and i agree) that the fan motor is gone. it ended the day but i could still run on the highway and make it home ok. what might have helped a little is if i had a heater, the core went out the day before the browns camp run.

This is a picture with the tank removed. If it looks like this, it will need to be replaced. If it has horizontal rows, you can run water through it. Water should flow easily through it with little restriction. If the flow out the bottom is far less than what you pour in the top, its plugged.

The radiator temperature should be even across the radiator and get cooler little by little as you go from the inlet at the top and the outlet at the bottom. If there are cold spots, it is plugged. Have you replaced the water pump recently? 4.0's have two different water pumps. The one designed for a serpentine belt are designed to spin backwards and will not pump effectively spinning clockwise.

Expert Posts: 3199 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Mid-Willamette Valley | Good info Dave! My Cruiser is has an oddity in the cooling system: 1. The upper radiator hose gets pretty firm / pressurized and hot. The lower radiator stays fairly flexible and cool / ambient... 2. As you feel the radiator going from top to bottom, it starts hot, gets slightly cooler 1/4 way down, luke warm 1/2 way down, and cold 3/4 way down. I can't imagine it's THAT effective of a radiator, but it doesn't overheat at all... I think I'll know for sure this August when we get into the 90 degree temps...
