Recently people have been razzing Pooh about his winch situation.  This got me thinking "I currently have no vehicles with functional winches just like Pooh".

I have many winches sitting around.  My Ranger has an XD9000I that quit last summer while building the race track.  Pooh got the dumptruck stuck and after winching it out my winch quit.  I have also acquired an 8274 with a bad oil leak, a disassembled M5000, and two 1700lb warn works winches over the years that are not mounted on anything.  Most recently, I picked up the ARB bumper and M6000 that Daveys friend was trying to sell.

So one of my goals in 2010 is to remedy this situation.

Step one.  Fix the Ranger winch.  A quick check of the electrical system and I found that two solenoids were fried.  Never try to understand the way Warn wires these or you will have a headache for all eternity.  The solenoids were cheap and available to ship right away from StreetsideAuto.com.  The new solenoids are cooler than the old ones because they have warn symbols on them.  The solenoids on this winch are not bolted in.  The slide into grooves and are held there by the wires.

The first picture is before, the second picture is after.   Step one complete, the winch works good.

Wow, that is some funky wiring! Glad you got one winch working. After having functional winches on both of my rigs for a while now, I hate the thought of not having one! A couple months ago, both of mine stopped working at the same time. I freaked out and got them both working again in one day.

Does that 8274 just need a gasket or something?. I'll give you 100 dollars for it as is

The 8274 needs a new seal where the drum enters the gearbox. I traded $300 woth of labor for it. I plan to fix it during Winchquest 2010 and mount it on my Dodge, Van, or Scout.

...I was thinking the same thing B!

Glad you figured out the winch Dave!

The Warn solenoids are usually around $25 each. They are 'slightly' upgraded Ford started solenoids, which cost around $7 each at AutoZone. I've been running the Ford solenoids for like 7 years in my 8274.

The autozone part number is F460, or at least it used to be . Why I remember that stupid crap is beyond me.

As much as I don't want Obama Love stickers on my rig , I do want to see Pooh with a working winch.

I will join you on your quest. I have started rebuilding the 8274 I have. That seal your talking about comes in a kit. I got a rebuilt kit for the 8274 at sixstates that has all the seals and bushings nad I thing it was around 25 bucks.

Thanks. I should already have it. I had Warn send me the IPB's for the 8274 and M5000 so I can get started on them.

Wish I could find a way to make my 8274 work on the sami and Cruiser. It used to be on a 2-stinger cradle, but it never looked "right"...

Just keep your eyes open.  Broken ones come up for cheap now and then.  You just have to be ready to snatch them up when they do.  I am a compulsive truck parts shopper.

...and yes those are bees nests! This old girl hasn't been used in a while. Everything looks good... just gonna go through everything like I did on the sami's 8274. These winches are so simple and easy to work on. We'll see how it goes...

Maybe, we'll see... gotta rebuild this old girl and then decide on the bumper. Still trying to find a used ARB but considering a KoopaFab product.

Anyone have recommendations for removing those corroded cut off bolts? Should be fun.
